About the Event:

The Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon (THEM) is held annually on 29 Of Ma , to commemorate the anniversary of the first ascent of Mount Everest by Sherpa Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary.
The start of this extraordinary Marathon is at Everest Base Camp (5356m ) on the Khumbu Glacier and in close proximity to the famous Khumbu Icefall.
THEM is the highest marathon in the world. He performs mostly downhill over rough mountain trails and yak trails through the beautiful Sagarmatha National Park up to Namche Bazaar, the " Sherpa capital " on 3440m. In 2006, Deepak Rai set the course record with a time of 3:28h.
To ensure the necessary height adjustment and reach the high-altitude starting point of the run, the runners participate in a nearly three-week Everest Marathon program. It includes four nights in a hotel in the bustling capital city Kathmandu including sight-seeing and a 14-day full service trek to Everest Base Camp and climbing Kala Patthar (5545m). Thus an optimal acclimatization is ensured. During the trek, participants will be accompanied by a full Sherpa expedition team. Of course, with proper medical care.
On race day, there are catering [ &] marshals. Although there are a total 2000m downhill, it is a challenging course: in addition to the overall high altitude and snow and ice in the higher elevations, exposed and splinted places, steep and long climbs are to deal with again and again. Only fit and experienced (mountain) runners can sign up for the marathon.
Family members and friends who do not want to run the race, can choose the trekking option and accompany their loved ones.
